Knitting for Preemies

Giving Back, I can't think of anything I would rather do.  Several of my grandchildren have had issues as infants so I've been knitting hats to be taken to the closest hospitals that have Neonatal Units.  The pattern is below for three infant sizes.  You too can be a blessing to a family with a baby in the Niku.

Sizes:  2-4 pounders, (5-7 pounders and 8-10 pounders)
Needles:  4, (6, 8)
Yarn:  approximately 1-2 ounce sport or baby yarn

Cast on 50 sts

Row 1-8 (10) (10):  Ribbing (K2, P2) across
Row 9: K across row (skip) (skip)
Row 10: P across row (skip) (skip)
Row 11: K across row
Row 12: P across row

Continue until hat measures 4" (5") (6")
Decrease Row 1: (K10, K2 tog) to end of row.
Decrease row 2: Purl across
Decrease Row  3:  (K9, K2 tog) to end of row
Decrease Row 4:  Purl across
Decrease Row 5: (K8, K2 tog) to end of row
Decrease Row 6: Purl across

Cut yarn with a 10 inch tail.  Using a yarn needle, thread yarn in needle and then weaven needle and yarn through remaining hat stitches on needle to remove from knitting needle.  Pull tightly to gather, then sew the hat seam down to the brim.  Stitch back and forth inside hat a few times and cut yarn to end.

**NOTE**  I was given this pattern by a friend and do not know the author of the pattern.
