Eggs - New Layers Growing in our Chicken Tractor

Our current layers are Red Star Link Hybrids.............they are horrible.  Burned out fast, don't lay in hot or cold weather and I SHOULD HAVE KNOW BETTER but I needed some chickens fast and they were purchased at 5 months old and ready to lay.

We now have a nice variety of chicks growing up in our chicken tractor that will start laying in January.  I can't wait!  Our varieties are:  Barred Rocks, Black Australorps, Buff Orphingtons, and Auracanas (green eggs).  We like to keep our chickens for two years so next year we'll get some Rhode Island Reds and I'll know which chickens have to leave the following year.

While they love being in the chicken tractor that is moved once a day so they have fresh grass and whatever bugs might be in there, whenever you open the top several of them fly out.  Three did just that when Mike went to take these pictures and he had to spend about 30 minutes chasing them down.  Sorry honey!
