Why Pastured Poultry?

Heritage Harvest Homestead prides itself in producing PASTURED poultry (broiler chickens, eggs, and turkeys)!!!

All of our poultry products are "Pastured", meaning, they are out on the grass/fields and are able to scratch the earth and eat as many bugs and/or grass that they can find (in season of course)!

NO hormones or Antibiotics are given to our poultry!  Additionally, they are supplemented with organic or transitional, non-GMO grains.

Pastured chickens (both broilers and layers) and turkeys provide a much more superior flavor and higher nutrient values than mass-produced poultry (see graphic below regarding egg quality)!

Our Pastured Chicken Egg Layers are a group of Rhode Island Red (brown eggs) girls.  We will be adding Aracanas (green eggs) and Barred Rocks (White Eggs) in the spring.  We're a small farm, but we want it that way to maintain the quality our customers demand.

Broiler Chickens

Our Broiler Chickens are first raised in a warm brooder pen until they are about 2 weeks old and have feathered out a bit.  They are then moved to a CHICKEN TRACTOR.  This fancy moble chicken pen is moved twice a day giving the chickens inside plenty of fresh green grass and the bugs contained therein.  They love it and get very excited when they hear us coming. This tractor holds only 25 birds at a time.  We raise 4 batches each year.  If demand rises past that we will build additional 'tractors'.  The 'tractors' also protect the chickens from preditors, which we seem to have plenty of.

Turkeys

Turkeys will again be raised by the Slocum family starting in 2013 so get your reservations in early.  We raise our turkeys to 14-18 pounds.  There's no better flavored birds to be found inside your local market and you don't have to worry about what exactly is in that watery gue that is injected in commercial birds.
